This movie puts Bad Boys to shame. Even the destruction of a giant mansion in Bad Boys II is overshadowed by a similar, much more powerful scene in I, Robot. I'd have to say this is Will's finest performance since he released, The Will Smith Music Video Collection. Some of his best acting occurs during a shower scene, although I won't say more because that scene deserves its own post. You can understand my disapointment when I ran across the first line of Desson Howe's review in the Washington Post: "WILL SMITH just ran into something unusual for him lately: a summer movie hit." Ouch.
With lines like: "You are the dumbest smart person I've ever met," Will deserves more respect. Another favorite line occurs an hour and twenty minutes into the movie. In a very high tension scene Will, or rather his character, Detective Del Spooner, sneezes and then quips, "...excuse me, I'm alergic to bullshit."
For those that don't know, I, Robot is based on a series of short stories by Isaac Asimov. Asimov was a great writer and the stories have held up after more than fifty years, although some might think they are a tad quaint by today's standards. Of course, today's standards include lines like "...excuse me, I'm alergic to bullshit."
Since this movie generated $144 million in theaters, I assume you've all heard about it and don't need any plot summary. I'll just say the robots are undeniably cool and the movie is a fast-paced thriller. Don't miss it. Bienvenido a la future.
